Everything about henna

Henna is a reddish-brown dye made from the powdered leaves of a tropical shrub, being used to colour the hair, and decorate the body. The latin name for henna is Lawsonia Inermis. It is a bush that grows in the north of Africa, the Middle East and India. It is used to decorate the skin after the plant is crushed into henna powder. Henna needs to develop for hours to leave a red stain.

To create henna powder, leaves of the henna plants are dried, crushed up, and then mixed with water and essential oils to deep olive-colored paste that, when applied to the skin, eventually produces a reddish-brown stain thanks to its natural dyes.

What is Henna

Where does henna come from?

Henna comes from the plant Lawsonia Inermis, also known as the henna plants. This plant is a small flowering plant that grows in tropical climates such as Africa and Northern Asia. While its flowers are often used to produce perfume, its leaves contain a useful staining pigment called lawsome (also known as hennotannic acid), in various hues from burnt orange, to deep red. To create henna paste for skins, henna powder extracted from the plant will be mixed with essential oil, sugar, and lemon juice etc. Henna is a beautiful, natural product that has been used for ages. The art of applying henna on human body has been practiced in India, Africa, and the Middle East.

How has henna been used?

Henna has been used since antiquity to dye not only fabric like ancient art and leather, but also skin, hair, and fingernails as a symbol to adorn women's bodies for social and holiday celebrations. The history of using henna can date back to the late Bronze Age in ancient Egypt and Eastern Mediterranean. Nowadays, henna has developed into body art. Since people regards henna as containing ''barakah''(blessings), it is widely used on the mehndi night (pre wedding). Different extensive henna patterns are applied on brides' bodies to represent luck, joy, and beauty.

Nowadays, henna is used for a wide range of contemporary purposes. Henna artists are applying henna to their client’s body to give an effect like a temporary tattoo. Therefore, henna is used at many events, such as music festivals, to create body art and decorations.

Since the basic ingredients of henna are filled with natural minerals and protein, henna can even be used for the treatment of treating a few skin conditions, for example, impetigo, bacterial skin contamination. Because of its cooling effects, people that live in the desert have been using henna as a tool to control their body temperature for centuries. The cooling effect was felt for as long the henna stain remained on the skin. In addition, it has also been used as an organic dye by painters, and to dye fabrics such as silk, wool, and leather.

Use of Henna

Due to its magnificent staining power, henna can also be used as a natural alternative to synthetic hair dyes or nail stains.  Nowadays henna for hair or brows—sometimes mixed with other natural dyes—can achieve colors ranging from light red to black henna.

Using henna to dye hair also has a long history which can date back to ancient Egyptian period. It was found that the hair of an Egypt princess had bright reddish orange dyed hair, probably with henna. Nowadays, henna has been treated as a healthier, and more natural substitution to chemical dyes for hair/eyebrow hair coloring. The fun fact about henna dye is that the henna actually helps strengthen the hair.

The difference between henna brows and regular dye is the amount of ammonia, the longevity, and the ability to mix and combine different shades to create the perfect stain. Henna stains BOTH the skin and the hair for longer-lasting results including up to 2 weeks on the skin and 6 weeks on the hair. Also, the substance is different from the normal tint compared to the henna. Normal tint has a gel consistency and henna has a fine powder structure.
