Precare: How your clients can prepare for a brow treatment
In This Article
What is precare?
Precare is the essential prep work your clients can do before their brow treatment to ensure the best possible results. From keeping the skin clean to avoiding certain products or treatments, precare is all about creating the ideal canvas for your work. By educating your clients on these simple but effective steps, you’re not just helping them get better results, you’re also making your job easier and their experience smoother.
What NOT to do before a Brow Treatment
To achieve flawless results, there are a few things your clients should avoid in the days leading up to their brow appointment. Here’s a list of what NOT to do:
1 day before the appointment..
- No Alcohol or caffeine: Advise clients to avoid alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before the procedure, as these can increase sensitivity and affect the skin’s response to treatment.
- No Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, or Advil/Ibuprofen: These can thin the blood and make the skin more prone to bruising during the procedure.
- Shower and fix hair: Let clients know they should shower and style their hair beforehand, as they’ll need to avoid getting their brows wet for several days after the treatment.
- Don’t overdo it with makeup: Makeup residue can linger even after cleansing, potentially reacting with treatment products and causing irritation or uneven results. It’s best to start with a clean, product-free canvas.
1-2 weeks before the appointment..
- Avoid facial treatments: Treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion can make the skin around the brows too sensitive for procedures like lamination or tinting. This might lead to discomfort or irritation during the appointment.
- Say NO to (self)-tanning products: If clients plan to self-tan at home, advise them to avoid the brow area to prevent unwanted staining or uneven results. For salon self-tanning, ensure they schedule it well before their brow appointment to avoid any color interference. Why? Self-tanners can cause unexpected color changes when mixed with brow treatments. This might result in unwanted tones in the brow area. And orange, patchy brows are not what your clients came for!
2-4 weeks before the appointment..
- Avoid tweezing, waxing, or threading: Shaping brows before the appointment might remove hairs that you actually need to create the perfect brow design. Plus, freshly tweezed or waxed skin can be more prone to irritation when exposed to treatment products. They should leave the shaping on you, a Brow Pro!
- Stay away from oily skincare products: Oils and heavy moisturizers can create a barrier on the skin, preventing tints, dyes, or henna from staining evenly. This can result in patchy or lighter-than-expected brows.
- Hold off on facials and skin treatments: Treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion can make the skin around the brows too sensitive for procedures like lamination or tinting. This might lead to discomfort or irritation during the appointment.
- NO Botox: Botox can affect the positioning of the brows, and it’s best to let it settle at least 2 weeks before performing any brow treatments to ensure the best results.
By helping your clients understand the “why” behind these don’ts, you’ll ensure they arrive ready for the best possible results, and a hassle-free appointment for you.
What TO do before a brow treatment
Now that we’ve covered what to avoid, let’s dive into what your clients should do to prepare for their brow treatment. These simple steps will ensure their brows are a perfect canvas:
- Cleanse the brow area: Encourage clients to gently wash their face and brows before the appointment, ensuring no makeup, oils, or residue remains. A clean surface allows Liquid Dye, Henna, or Lamination products to work effectively.
- Prep with Elixir No. 3: Introduce your clients to Elixir No. 3, the perfect pre-treatment product. This powerful serum not only cleanses but also nourishes the brow hairs, creating the ideal foundation for any brow service. Bonus: it helps keep brows hydrated and healthy between appointments!
- Let brows grow out: Advise clients to leave their brows untouched for at least two weeks but preferably even longer before their appointment so you have a good base to shape. It takes the hair 2-6 weeks to grow back, so if your client wants to change their brow shape, advise them to let them grow for a full 6 weeks. This gives you the most natural brow to work with, making it easier to shape and define a new shape!
- Moisturize (if needed): While heavy oils should be avoided, light moisturizers can help ensure the skin isn’t too dry or flaky, which could affect how products adhere.
- Communicate allergies or sensitivities: If clients have a history of skin reactions or allergies, remind them to inform you beforehand. It’s always good to print out a consent form. Patch tests are a great way to ensure treatments are safe for them. Read more about PPD allergies here!

The importance of Consent Forms
Before starting any brow treatment, having your clients fill out a consent form is more important than you think. These forms are not just any papers, they protect both you and your clients while ensuring a professional and transparent experience.
- Client safety and allergies: A consent form helps you gather crucial information about your client’s medical history, allergies, or skin sensitivities. This ensures you can tailor the treatment to their needs and avoid potential reactions.
- Professionalism and transparency: Consent forms outline the procedure, potential risks, and aftercare instructions, giving clients a clear understanding of what to expect.
- Liability protection: These forms serve as a legal document to protect your business in case of misunderstandings or disputes. By having a signed form, you demonstrate that the client was informed about the procedure and its potential outcomes.
- Consistency across services: Using consent forms for all treatments creates a streamlined process for both you and your clients.
