The importance of aftercare after Brow & Lash treatments

written byŽaneta Mlčáková

You’re probably familiar with the following situation: a few days after their treatment your client comes back to your salon. Mad that their brows are gone, patchy, collapsed, or faded. One counter-question and you find out that your client went to the spa with her friend. Time to talk aftercare! There is never too little repeating when it comes to aftercare tips. To make your life easier, we have created aftercare leaflets you can give to your clients after treatments. But first, let’s dive into the importance of aftercare instructions - yes, again!

Aftercare for Brow Henna & Hybrid Dye

When following the aftercare instructions, Supercilium henna can stay on the skin for up to 2 weeks and up to 6 weeks on the hair. Your client has to know that by underestimating the aftercare tips, the henna stain lasts way shorter than it should. It’s important to communicate this clearly and to manage expectations upfront. If your client has oily skin, for example, the stain will last for a shorter period of time.

The same goes for Hybrid Dye. Supercilium Brow & Lash Dye has a strong stain on the skin lasting up to 9 days and up to 7 weeks on the hair. It perfectly covers very gray and white hair and can be used on both brows and lashes. It only takes up to 20 minutes maximum to see the final results, which is shorter than the usual henna treatment. Big plus: It’s loved by brow professionals as it can be combined with Brow Lamination & Lash Lift in one treatment!

Although the treatments both have different characteristics, the aftercare instructions for henna and hybrid dye treatments are the same. Below all aftercare tips, with some more background why they’re so important.

Tip 1. Don't clean and/or wet the henna-dyed brows for at least 24 hours after treatment.
This includes activities such as swimming, showering, and going to the sauna or bath. It’s important to avoid getting the brows wet for at least 24 hours, however, the longer the better! We recommend even 48 hours so the henna can absorb the skin better.

Tip 2. Avoid sunbathing for 24 hours, this can change the tint of the color and can increase the risk of allergies.
Sun can be dangerous to fresh new brows! Sun can cause a change in the color of the brows as well as it can cause an allergic reaction to the skin, which is very sensitive after the treatment. So it’s better to avoid heavy sunshine on the 24H after the treatment. Wearing a cap can do the trick.

Tip 3. Avoid heat treatments like steam rooms or saunas.
Because of the heat, the skin will become moisturized faster and will sweat more than usual, which can again result in patchy brows and faded color.

Tip 4. For people who live in tropical climates, use CBD Defence Balm with SPF 30.
At Supercilium, we offer a nourishing balm that protects the skin from free radicals and offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. Is that not a perfect upselling product for your salon? Clients can use it after 48H to protect their brows and the area around them.

Tip 5. Use cleansing products as little as possible.
Every cleanse can cause the color to fade more quickly. So it’s best to avoid deep cleansing as much as possible in the first days.

Tip 6. Avoid scrubs and peeling products containing AHA and glycolic acid.
Explain to your clients that the purpose of peeling or scrubbing is to remove the dead skin cells layer. And that’s exactly what you don’t want with your freshly tinted brows. Doing this after a tint treatment will exfoliate the henna stain from the skin. Bye, bye beautiful brows.

Tip 7. Allow four weeks between treatments.
Healthy brows are always our priority. If you do too many treatments in a short period of time, it will damage the brow hairs. Therefore we advise you to always wait for 4 weeks before you book a new brow treatment.

Tip 8. Avoid fake tans. They may interfere with the color of the dye. It can turn orange.
Remind your clients that applying a fake tan before the treatment or after can result in orange brows. It’s best to stay away from fake tans for some time! Both formulas together are just not the best combo. If you see your client coming in with a fake tan, be honest and manage her expectations that hybrid or henna dye is just not the best timing right now.

Tip 9. Avoid oil-based makeup removers and oil-based makeup.
Oil + Dye is just not the best combo, since it fades the color more quicker. Everything you don’t want when you have fresh brows.

Aftercare for Brow Lamination & Lash Lifting

While your client admires their amazingly lifted lashes and laminated brows, you can take your time explaining how to take care of them after the treatment. The moment your client leaves your salon, she should start following these important instructions:

Tip 1. Do not apply makeup or receive any other eye treatments for 24 hours after your treatment.
Lashes and brows after a lamination are very delicate - therefore the first 24 hours the lashes and brows need to be treated with extra care. The process of lamination can be very heavy for the hairs and getting another treatment can only damage them.

Tip 2. Avoid rubbing and touching the eyes or brows.
Your client should avoid any contact with lashes or brows, they are no-go zones for the following 24-48 hours! Be clear about the fact that eyebrows always remain deformable, even after a Brow Lamination treatment, since the product is still processing in the 24-48H after the treatment. Just simply leave them alone and admire your new brows & lashes.

Tip 3. Avoid contact with water, moisture, or hot temperatures for 24 hours.
Same as with tint, water in the first 24H can undo the treatment or can cause parts of the lashes and brows to collapse.

Tip 4. Avoid putting contact lenses back in for 24 hours.
Even if your client hates glasses, she will have to put them back on. But only for 24 hours!

Your eyes are sensitive, so you want to make sure the lenses don’t come in contact with any leftover residue.

Tip 5. Avoid swimming/sauna for 24 hours.
By now your client should be scared of the word W-A-T-E-R! No swimming, no sauna, no bathtub. Shower carefully (but better to avoid at all) and try not to wet the lashes and brows. Bubble baths at their own risk!

Tip 6. Use Supercilium Nourishing Aftercare Balm
A perfect aftercare balm for brow treatments that became our must-have in daily life. It can be used for literally anything! A lip balm, to nurture fresh tattoos or to heal scratches. You can offer Supercilium Nourishing balms at your salon for your clients! But remember, only after 48H it can be used to nourish the eyebrows and the area around it.

Tip 7. Comb the brows or lashes upward using a spoolie.
Brows and lashes can still deform and change their position since the product is still processing for a while after the treatment. It is therefore important to support them in staying in the desired position after the treatment. It’s best to not touch them at all, but if you see them bouncing back a little, the spoolie is the best tool to carefully comb them in the right direction.

Tip 8. Sleep on your back for up to 2 days after treatment to prevent the brows or lashes from being squashed by the pillow.
Pillow can be a very dangerous player in the brow and lash game. Advise your clients to sleep on their back, as rubbing against the pillow can harm their new beautiful lashes and brows. The hairs are more delicate after the treatment, so if you sleep on them for a few hours, it can cause the shape to change.
