1. Never assume what clients want: Communication is key

One of the most important lessons is to never assume what your client wants! Always ask for their preferences and listen carefully to their needs. Effective communication builds trust and ensures you deliver the results they’re looking for. Sometimes, even if you know a different approach might work better, it’s important to consult and respect your client’s wishes. If your client wants a darker color than what would suit them, try to communicate your professional opinion while respecting their preferences.

"The worst mistake I’ve made as a brow artist is assuming what my clients want! Always ask the client's preference and listen to their needs," advises Chloé, US champion in PMU and Supercilium Master Trainer. Communication is the foundation of a successful client-artist relationship.

2. Keep Mapping

Brow mapping is a game-changer for any brow artist. Remember- take your time and don’t rush the process. Brow mapping is a skill that you can nail! It also shows your client the desired shape, so you can make their dream brows before starting with a shape they might not like.

"For newbies in the industry, keep mapping! Mapping will be your strong point! Take your time, don’t rush any service! Communication with your clients and setting clear expectations is key," says Chloé. Lee, an esthetician who teaches brow artistry, known for her business skills and brow design expertise in North Carolina shared with us: "I wish I would have known how to map! Mapping is now a craze but when I started in 2016, it was not as popular. I learned the hard way by butchering brows, but it helped mold me into a skilled artist who can freelance a shape."

3. Trends are important to follow

Staying updated with the latest trends is more important than you think! Trends change fast, so keep learning and trying new techniques. For example, the Airbrush Brow trend is making waves in the industry! Clients also love to see new services and try new things. You should also follow other brow artists and influencers online to stay inspired and up-to-date.

Fatima, a Brow Pro with amazing attention to detail and a talent for transforming brows in Albany, says: "Looking back at my early days in this biz, I wish I knew how crucial it is to keep learning and trying new stuff. Trends change fast, after all!”.

4. Invest in trainings

Happy clients are your golden ticket to success. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to get new clients! Invest in good training, stay sharp, and build a strong reputation and relationship with your clients. They are more likely to recommend your services to others, filling up your schedule in no time!

Creating the perfect brow looks that turn heads will have people asking your clients where they got their brows done. At Supercilium Academy, we offer online trainings that allow you to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your home!

"Practice makes perfect! Once you do your course, make sure you start practicing on family and friends right away to build up your confidence”, advises Nicole from Solos Beauty.

5. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Remember, not every treatment will look "Instagram-perfect." Different clients have different skin and brow types. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Everyone’s definition of perfect varies, and it’s important to understand that your journey is unique!

"Something that I wanted to know when I first started is that you are only as good as you can be. If you have a client with flawless skin and full brows, your results will be amazing. But if you get a client with difficult skin or brows, the results won’t be the same. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; not every treatment needs to look 'Instagram-perfect.' Everyone’s journey is different," advises a Brow Pro Chloé.

6. Know your worth

Never undervalue your work. It’s important to set fair prices for your services. And always be smart with your finances—test your market, strategies, and brand before diving in fully. Slowly build your empire without rushing into debt.

We talked about humble beginnings with Barbie, founder of Browaholics, in our Show Character Series. In this episode, she dives into the beginning of her career, her journey to become a brow artist and how immigration shaped her as a businesswoman. Watch it below!

7. Work on content

Content creation is key to attracting new clients. Set up your phone in portrait mode, use good lighting, clean your camera lenses, and take lots of pictures from consistent angles. Build your personal brand from day one and invest in promotion to reach a wider audience!

"Always set up your phone in portrait mode, make sure you have good lighting, clean your camera lenses, and get the same angle of the face. Take a lot of pictures to get extra shots just in case," advises a Brow Artist Stephanie. And Anastasia, the content queen, advises: "Work on content. A lot. Stick to your own style and don't worry about others' opinions. Be patient, invest in developing both professional and soft skills, treat your clients as you would like to be treated, follow trends but don't let them rule you, and start building your personal brand from the first day of your career. Invest in promotion."

8. Learn wax basics

Waxing is an important and very common brow treatment to shape beautiful brows. Waxing is applying a thin layer of wax to hair and removing it quickly to achieve a clean shape. Understanding the basics of waxing, including recognizing allergies and knowing when you can and cannot wax, is important to know before you start your journey as a Brow Artist!

"Knowing the basics of waxing, such as allergies and when you can and cannot wax, is a must-master skill!" says a brow pro Janniree, a master teacher of our Airbrush Course

9. Make the brows POP

Make the brows pop by using a Concealer and Brow Control products. This simple tip can create a “wow” effect and improve the overall appearance of your work.

"A tip for making brows pop is to place some concealer and brow control for the wow effect and work with an amazing brand that appreciates you like Supercilium," shares a Brow Pro Chloé. These small touches can elevate your brow work to the next level!

10. Don’t give up

The journey to becoming a successful brow artist is filled with challenges, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Embrace the hard parts, and remember that every Brow Pro was once a beginner! Focus on your own path, enjoy every moment, and believe in yourself. You can achieve anything you set your mind to with consistent practice! Because remember, practice makes perfect.

"The working path won't be easy but will be very beautiful, interesting, and unique. So don't be afraid of difficulties, don't compare yourself to others, and enjoy every single moment of your work. And never think that you can't do something. You CAN do anything you want," encourages Anastasia. "Never stop learning, focus on your own growth, and build strong relationships with your clients. Don't give up; the second you give up, you'll forget everything. While it's fresh in your mind, sharpen your skills with consistent practice and always stay positive."
